Russian special forces attack Ukrainians in Kursk, infiltrating gas pipelines

Russian special forces have moved several kilometers through a major gas pipeline near the town of Sudzha in an attempt to surprise Ukrainian forces as part of a major offensive to drive Ukrainian soldiers from the western Russian region of Kursk, pro-Russian war bloggers have said.

Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers seized about 1,300 square kilometers of Russia's Kursk region in August last year, in what Kiev has said was an attempt to gain a bargaining chip in future negotiations and force Russia to withdraw forces from eastern Ukraine, Reuters reports.

Russian advances in 2024 and the shift in US policy towards Ukraine and Russia by US President Donald Trump have caused fears among European leaders that Ukraine will lose the war and that Trump is turning his back on Europe.

The United States cut off military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine this month after a meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on February 28th was played out in a tense atmosphere in front of the world's media.

In its latest update on the situation in Kursk, Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces had retaken the village of Lebedevka, as well as captured Novenke, a village across the border in neighboring Ukraine's Sumy region.

Yuri Podolyaka, a pro-Russian military blogger of Ukrainian origin, said that Russian special forces had walked for kilometers along the inside of the main gas pipeline and some had spent several days in the pipe before surprising Ukrainian forces from the rear near Sudzha.
