She aims to maintain the special relationship with Trump but also the leading role in Europe. But her two-door game is no longer liked by either party...
It was a golden time at the G7 summit in Puglia in mid-June 2024. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was presented as a world leader. In the joint photo, she was positioned between US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Next came British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. They were all smiling. The guest of honor was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The United States praised Meloni for “Italy’s unwavering support for Ukraine.” And she was able to take credit, unusual for a leader of a far-right party. Even though it’s only been nine months since that summit, that photo now seems very old.
Because since January 20, the White House is no longer led by Joe Biden, but by Donald Trump, who has completely changed the cards of world politics. Since taking over the leadership of the Italian government in October 2022, Meloni has worked hard to build a good and credible image in the international arena.
Not only has Italy respected all European treaties, especially in terms of fiscal policy, but Meloni has established a good relationship with European Commission President von der Leyen, whom he has accompanied several times on trips to Tunis, Cairo and Lampedusa, having found in the Commission a strong ally in favor of a tough approach against illegal immigrants.
And Meloni's commitment has borne fruit. When the new European Commission was appointed in November 2024, Italy managed to impose its candidate, Raffaele Fitto from the Fratelli d'Italia party, as executive vice-president.
The same goes for transatlantic relations. In a photo taken at the White House in March 2024, Meloni smiles as the US president kisses her on the forehead. The prime minister had earned Joe Biden’s respect for not following the example of Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán in his rebellious behavior towards NATO and the European Union, supporting Ukraine, sanctions against Russia and sending weapons to Kiev.
But today it doesn't matter. According to Trump, Ukraine is a country ruled by a dictator, whom he ousted from the Oval Office a few weeks ago. NATO is an organization that the United States no longer intends to pay for, and the European Union is nothing more than a club specifically established to deceive Washington.

Only no one there intends to use her mediation. There is no meeting on the horizon, or perhaps, according to Italian government sources, it will happen “by the end of March.” Meloni is not a fan of either Trump or Zelensky, whom he once admired.
She seems to have chosen to speak with silence. In recent weeks, she has avoided any statements or said irrelevant things. For example, she says that she aims to analyze the changing world "with a cool head, without being affected by emotions and with strategic reflection."
She is said to be in regular phone conversations with Trump, and to have spoken to him the day after the ugly scene in the Oval Office. The contents of these calls are said to be currently classified. On the other hand, Meloni is said to have praised US Vice President JD Vance's speech at the Munich Security Conference, adding that she did not understand why everyone in Europe was so angry.
"Vance was talking about deep issues: identity, democracy, freedom of speech," said the Italian prime minister, underlining that she knows very well that "Europe has been sacrificed on the altar of leftism, bureaucracy, mercantilism."
On the other hand, he continues to support the world that Trump is destroying: he praises the Ukrainians, "a proud people fighting for freedom," calls for NATO protection, and wants to offer Ukraine "Article 5 guarantees," i.e. a commitment to NATO assistance in the event of aggression.
But at the same time, she says she will not send Italian troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping mission. "I will do everything to keep the West united" is her motto. Meloni's offer is there, but the demand is missing.
