US Supreme Court to review Trump's global tariffs

The United States Supreme Court has agreed to review a lawsuit over global tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, paving the way for a legal battle that touches on the heart of his economic agenda.

The high court's decision comes after a lower court declared illegal a series of import taxes imposed by the administration, including the so-called "Liberation Day" tariffs announced in April, as well as tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada, which the White House justified as measures to combat the entry of fentanyl into the US market.

Tariffs remain in effect.

While the case is being reviewed by the Supreme Court, the tariffs will remain in place. The decision is critical, as they constitute a key element of Trump's economic policy, which he has presented as a protection for American industry and as a tool for pressure on countries accused of unfair trade practices or drug trafficking.

The fundamental question: the power of the president

The case raises a major constitutional issue: how far does the president's power go to impose emergency tariffs without Congressional approval?

If the Supreme Court rules in Trump's favor, it would set a new precedent that expands the executive's power over trade and financial policies. But if the court upholds the previous ruling, it would significantly limit the president's authority to make unilateral decisions on the economy.
