Donald Trump became the first former president to be convicted of a felony on Thursday after a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying documents to conceal a payment to a pornographic actress to remain silent ahead of the election. 2016.
Mr. Trump was found guilty of 34 charges against him.
The decision puts the United States on uncharted territory ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election, when Mr. Trump, the Republican nominee, aims to win the race for the White House against Democratic President Joe Biden.
Mr Trump, 77, has denied the allegations and is expected to appeal the decision.
Prosecutors said Trump falsified records to hide reimbursements he made to his then-lawyer Michael Cohen, who paid porn actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 in the final weeks of the 2016 presidential campaign, in in exchange for her not going public with her claim that she and Trump had sex a decade ago.
The former president and Republican presidential nominee has pleaded not guilty, denying any sexual contact with Daniels and arguing that the payments made to Cohen's attorney were correctly identified in company records as legal expenses.
