Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has strongly expressed Greece's anger with the attitude and actions of the president of North Macedonia, who took the oath in the name of "Macedonia" and not the "Republic of North Macedonia" as stipulated in the Prespa Agreement.
Mitsotakis in his Facebook post talks about an "illegal and impermissible initiative" and "an act that violates the Prespa Agreement and the very Constitution of his country. However, undermining its future, as the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, have already stated.
At the same time, he declares that "Greece rejects manipulations like those with which Mrs. Silianovska is opening her mandate", which she "calls to return to her legal duties and the behavior that derives from her role". .

"The provocative choice of the new President of North Macedonia to violate the official text of the oath and to call her country by another name is an illegal and impermissible initiative. Act, which violates the Prespa Agreement and the very Constitution of its state. However, undermining its future, as already stated by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

It is known that as the opposition, New Democracy voted against the 2019 Agreement, in fact warning at the time of the problems that its failures would create. As a government, however, we respected Greece's signing of an international treaty, binding on the country. Unfortunately, the latest development confirms our continued cautious position.
Greece rejects manipulations like those with which Mrs. Silianovska is opening her mandate. He calls on her to return to her legal duties and the behaviors that flow from her role. We categorically state that we will not accept such slips. And we repeat that any progress in bilateral relations, as well as any step taken by Skopje towards Europe, depends on the sincere observance of the agreements. From the right use of the constitutional name of the neighboring state. And, of course, from avoiding challenges," concludes the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The 2018 Prespa agreement to rename Macedonia North Macedonia paved the way for its membership in NATO.

Greece warned that its bilateral relations with North Macedonia and Skopje's European course would depend on the full implementation of the agreement and "above all on the use of the country's constitutional name".

In a related development, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also condemned the move.

"For North Macedonia to continue its successful path to EU membership, it is essential that the country continues on the path of reforms and full compliance with its binding agreements, including the Prespa Agreement," she said in a statement to X .

Meanwhile, European Council President Charles Michel expressed his "disappointment" at Davkova's use of the former name of North Macedonia.

"The EU recalls the importance of continued implementation of legally binding agreements, including the Prespa agreement with Greece," he said in X.

After the new president did not use the constitutional name of North Macedonia during her speech, Greek ambassador Sophia Philippidou left the Assembly hall in protest.
