The Trump administration suffered a legal defeat after the deadly shooting in Minnesota. A judge limited ICE's powers...
A federal judge issued an injunction Friday night against President Donald Trump's administration over protests in Minnesota. The legal action comes after the widely publicized shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis by an immigration officer. The fatal shooting drew national attention and reignited debate over immigration enforcement and the rights of protesters.
On Friday, U.S. District Judge Katherine Menendez, appointed by former President Joe Biden, issued a preliminary injunction limiting the powers of federal immigration officials, particularly those who participated in Operation Metro Surge, to prohibit them from taking retaliatory action against individuals "engaging in peaceful and non-disruptive protest activities."
The order specifically prohibits the use of pepper spray or other means to disperse crowds in response to peaceful protests and prohibits officers from stopping or arresting demonstrators in vehicles unless they “forcibly obstruct or interfere with officers.”
In a statement to Newsweek on Friday evening, Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), responded to the order by saying, “The First Amendment protects freedom of speech and peaceful assembly, not rioting. DHS is taking reasonable and constitutional action to uphold the rule of law and protect our officers and the public from dangerous rioting. We remind the public that rioting is dangerous, obstructing law enforcement is a federal crime, and assaulting law enforcement is a felony.”
