An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 has hit France. The media write that as a result of the earthquake, one person was injured and a lot of material damage was recorded.
"An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 was registered on Friday in the west of France. It is the strongest earthquake recorded in the country since 2002 and one of the strongest earthquakes recorded in France in general", said the Minister for Environmental Transition and Territorial Cohesion, Christophe Bechy.
The earthquake happened on Friday at 18:38, with the epicenter between the cities of La Rochelle and Nior. Meanwhile, due to the earthquake, about 1100 houses were left without electricity and a transmission line was damaged.
Also, an aftershock with a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale was felt in the early hours of this morning in Deux-Sèvres, in the west of France.
"An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 was felt this morning at 04:27 in the same area of #DeuxSevres," the prefecture said in a statement this morning.
"Firefighters have been mobilized and carry out detection actions, to respond to calls and to check the condition of buildings, especially those damaged during the first earthquake", added the prefecture of Deux-Sèvres.
The last earthquake with a magnitude greater than 5.0 in France dates back to 2019.
