Rutte attributed an important role to Trump in increasing European countries' defense spending, noting that the US president managed to promote something that the United States has been seeking for decades.
NATO Secretary General Marco Rutte found himself in a difficult situation during the press conference following the NATO summit in Ankara.
The cause was a Danish journalist who asked Rutte if his "self-respect" had been affected by sitting next to Donald Trump as the US president talked about Greenland and criticized allies, such as Spain, even through economic pressure.
The journalist even claimed that the "old Mark Rutte" probably would not agree with such a stance.
The NATO Secretary General avoided a confrontation and chose to respond by focusing on the changes that, as he said, have been achieved in the Alliance. Rutte attributed an important role to Trump in increasing defense spending by European countries, noting that the US president managed to promote something that the United States has been seeking for decades.

As he put it, this is a development that Washington has been seeking "since the time of President Eisenhower." He even described this change as "transformative" for NATO, arguing that it makes Europe stronger and at the same time more important as a partner for the United States.
According to Rutte, strengthening European defense benefits not only Europe, but the entire Alliance, as it creates a more balanced relationship between the two sides of the Atlantic. The NATO Secretary General emphasized that the Alliance is in a much better position today thanks to commitments to greater defense investments.
Referring to Greenland, Rutte acknowledged the strategic importance of the Arctic Circle region, highlighting the challenges posed by Russia and China in the so-called “High North.” As he emphasized, such issues must be addressed collectively, through NATO mechanisms and cooperation.
