United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Washington has sufficient financial capacity to support the war against Iran without the need for tax increases.
In an interview with NBC News' "Meet the Press," he said that "there is ample funding to fund this war." Bessent added that a supplemental budget request submitted by the Pentagon — reportedly worth about $200 billion — is intended to bolster military capabilities for the future.
He emphasized that President Donald Trump has invested in strengthening the military, both during his first and second terms, with the aim of ensuring that the armed forces are sustainably equipped.
Bessent did not confirm the reported $200 billion figure, and the request for additional funding faces opposition in Congress. Democratic lawmakers, as well as some Republicans, have questioned the need for the fund, given the significant increase in defense spending last year.
The statements reflect the position of the US administration, while the debate over the costs and consequences of the conflict remains open in US domestic politics.
