Italy 'overrun' by water, flooding and sirens sound in 5 regions

A wave of bad weather has hit several regions of Italy, causing flooding, property damage and power outages. The situation is worst in the north and parts of the center of the country, where intense rainfall has forced authorities to intervene urgently.

In the Veneto region, the biggest problems have been recorded in Venice, where the municipalities of Spinea, Mirano, Mestre and Marghera have been hit hard by flooding. Underpasses have been filled with water, causing traffic jams and endangering the lives of citizens.

In Padua, flooding and significant damage were recorded in Casale di Scodosia, Merlara, Villafranca Padovana and Mestrino. Over 130 calls for help were registered in the fire department's operations room, which carried out at least 30 interventions for water damage and fallen trees.

A similar situation is also occurring in the south of Milan, in particular in the Lacchiarella area, where flooding with water levels of up to 40 centimeters in the streets has been reported. Firefighters have intervened to clear basements and unblock roads. Meanwhile, in Prato, the bad weather has caused branches and trees to fall, some of which have damaged cars and roofs of apartments.

The city of Viterbo was also hit by a powerful storm with hail, torrential rain and strong winds, which caused flooding and power outages in some parts of the city. Major underpasses were turned into dangerous streams of water and a large branch collapsed in the middle of Piazza Verdi.

In Rome and the surrounding province, more than 100 firefighters were called out to fallen trees, dangerous objects and other damage caused by the bad weather. The areas southeast of the capital and the coast between Fregene and Ostia were the hardest hit.

Due to deteriorating weather conditions, authorities have declared an orange alert for high risk in five regions.
