The explosions were first reported by Axios journalist Barak Ravid, who quoted an Israeli official as confirming the launch of an assassination attempt on top Hamas figures. Reuters reported witnesses seeing plumes of smoke rising over the Katara district, a popular area of the Qatari capital.
" The IDF and ISA carried out a precision strike targeting the senior leadership of the Hamas terrorist organization. For years, these members of the Hamas leadership have led the terrorist organization's operations, are directly responsible for the brutal massacre of October 7, and have orchestrated and managed the war against the state of Israel.
Before the attack, measures were taken to mitigate harm to civilians, including the use of precision munitions and additional intelligence.
"The IDF and ISA will continue to act decisively to defeat the Hamas terrorist organization responsible for the October 7 massacre ," the statement said.
Israeli media reports that US President Donald Trump has given Israel his approval for the attack on Hamas leadership in Qatar. Channel 12 cites an Israeli official in its report that Trump "gave the green light."
The Qatari government has reacted strongly to the attack, calling it a flagrant violation of international law and state sovereignty. In an official statement, the Qatari authorities described the strike as a "low and unacceptable act", warning that the consequences would be dealt with through diplomatic and legal channels.
Doha announced that a high-level investigation has been opened to verify the details of the attack and assess the damage. Qatari officials stressed that the safety of citizens is a priority, while holding Israel accountable for the clear violation of international norms.
This development shakes up regional diplomacy, as it is the first time that Israel has struck directly inside the territory of Qatar, a country that has long served as a political haven for Hamas leaders and as a mediator in negotiations with Palestine.
