Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels have killed more than 50 civilians at a funeral in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The victims were massacred with machetes, in another large-scale attack by the Islamic State-backed group, officials said.
The attack took place yesterday, Monday, evening in the town of Doyo, in the Lubero region of North Kivu province, said Makaire Sivikunula, a regional official.
"I can confirm the provisional death toll at 50. The victims were surprised at a memorial service in the village of Doyo at around 9pm and most were killed with machetes," he said. "The investigation is ongoing."
Colonel Alain Kiwewe, the military commander of Lubero, told Reuters that the death toll was approaching 60 and could rise as the fate of some people remains unknown.
The South African Air Force (ADF) is one of many armed groups seeking to seize territory in the resource-rich eastern part of Congo.
The Congolese army and its ally, Uganda, say they have intensified operations against the Allied Air Force in recent weeks.
Last month, the Associated Press (ADF) killed over 50 civilians in various attacks, while an ADF attack on a church in July killed 38 people.
