Israel wants former British Prime Minister Tony Blair to serve as a coordinator for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli press reports.
Netanyahu's government aims to improve the humanitarian situation inside the Palestinian enclave and reduce international pressure as it continues its fight against Hamas.
According to sources, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hoped to draw on Blair's experience as a former regional envoy for the Middle East Quartet to ease international concerns about the political cost of Israel's campaign in Gaza, writes the Financial Times.
Netanyahu has been in contact with Blair on the matter and talks have continued in recent weeks. The former British leader's office said he was "not given or offered a position", but did not deny any contact.
The exact definition, scope and authority of the proposed role have yet to be clearly defined, adding that the emphasis will be on "providing medical care and the ability to evacuate the injured and sick from the Gaza Strip."
According to the report, efforts to ease the humanitarian situation in Gaza are being coordinated by Israel's health and defense ministries, with the former assisting with a number of projects over the past few weeks, including efforts of international actors for the construction of field hospitals in Egypt and the dispatch of a hospital ship from France.
