US President Donald Trump has responded negatively when asked if he is considering running for a third presidential term, an action that, according to experts, is prohibited by the US Constitution.
"I'm going to be president for eight years, I'm going to be president for two terms. I've always thought that was very important," Trump said on NBC's "Meet the Press" with Kristen Welker, in an interview that will air Sunday.
Trump has previously said he was "not kidding" when he said he wants to serve a third or even fourth term as US president.
He later said his statements were intended to put the "fake media" to shame.
His company, The Trump Organization, is selling hats with the slogan "Trump 2028," fueling speculation that he may seek to stay in power after his second term ends in January 2029.
In the interview recorded from his Florida residence, Trump said he has received many "requests" from people asking him to consider staying in office.
"A lot of people want me to do this," Trump said, days after celebrating the first 100 days of his second term.
"As far as I know, that's something you're not allowed to do. I don't know if it's constitutional that they don't allow you to do that or anything like that," Trump said.
He added that "there are a lot of people selling the 2028 hat."
"But that's not something I intend to do," he said, then naming several Republicans who could replace him, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"I think four years is enough time to do something truly spectacular," he added.
Article 22 of the Constitution states that "no one may be elected President more than twice."
Amending the Constitution would require approval by two-thirds of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as approval by three-quarters of the country's state governments.
However, some Trump supporters argue that there is a gap in the Constitution that has not been tested in the courts.
When asked by NBC whether anyone has approached him with these theories, Trump evaded the answer, saying that "as a big supporter, a lot of people have said different things."
During the interview, Trump also rejected criticism of how he is handling the economy.
"Look, yeah, everything is fine," he said after the turmoil his tariff plan caused in international economies, causing the US economy to shrink for the first time since 2022.
"I said this is a transitional period. I think we're going to do fantastically," he added.
When asked if the US economy could continue to shrink, he replied: "Anything can happen. But I think we will have the best economy in the history of our country."
