Qatar's Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi has stated that the conflict in the Middle East could "collapse the economies of the world."
Saad al-Kaabi estimated that even if the war ended today, it would take "weeks to months" for the country to return to normal gas supplies, following the Iranian bombing of the Ras Laffan plant.
Al-Kaabi added that if the war continues for several weeks, GDP growth around the world will be affected.
"The price of energy for everyone will increase. There will be shortages of some products and there will be a chain reaction of factories not being able to supply," he told the FT.
Al-Kaabi is primarily concerned about his country's economy, of course, despite his warnings of international pain.
Asian countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh and India are more dependent on Qatari gas than European countries, which face less risk of shortages, according to Euronews.
But there will undoubtedly be global repercussions. Al-Kaabi said Asian buyers would be forced to bid against Europeans for the gas that is still available, for example.
