The American newspaper Washington Post reports that Russia is providing Iran with information on targeting American military forces in the Middle East.

The report reveals the involvement of one of Washington's biggest opponents in the war, even if it is indirect.

Russia has reportedly provided Iran with the locations of US military installations, including warships and aircraft, since the start of the war on Saturday, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

The aid, which has not been previously reported, marks Russia's involvement in the Middle East conflict.

The US Department of Defense and the CIA declined to comment on the Russian assistance.

Officially, Russia has called for an end to the war, which it has called an "unprovoked armed aggression."

Iran is having difficulty locating US forces

Iran's ability to detect US forces has been significantly reduced, officials say, less than a week after hostilities began.

However, Tehran has launched thousands of drone and missile attacks on US military posts, embassies and civilians, while the joint US-Israeli campaign has hit more than 2,000 Iranian targets.

US officials have said the Iranian attacks have targeted strategic targets, such as command and control infrastructure, radars and temporary structures, such as the facility in Kuwait, where six US soldiers were killed.

Along the same lines, Russia is providing Iran with information on how to strike these strategic facilities.

"The Iranians are conducting very precise attacks on early warning radars or long-range radars ," said Dara Mashikot, an expert on Russian armed forces at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

"They are looking for command and control," she added.

Russia, having gained advanced space capabilities and experience from the war in Ukraine, is providing valuable satellite information to Iran, which does not have its own satellite constellation.

The Washington Post has previously reported that, despite the blow to one of its closest allies, the Kremlin sees potential advantages in a prolonged war between the US and Iran, including higher oil revenues and an acute crisis that distracts America and Europe from the war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin, for its part, has said only that it "considers this its problem and it is not its war. From a strategic point of view, Ukraine remains undoubtedly the main priority."
