North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has held a ceremony to unveil a new submarine, which Pyongyang claims can carry nuclear weapons.
A report in state media said the submarine strengthened the country's nuclear deterrent with "openness and borders".
A nuclear-capable submarine has long been on North Korea's list of weapons it wants to build.
In photographs released by state media, Kim is standing at a shipyard, surrounded by navy officers and shadowed by a large black submarine, which is reportedly capable of launching nuclear weapons.
Kim has been working to develop this submarine for many years, and it is seen as an essential part of his nuclear weapons program.
North Korea has yet to demonstrate that it can successfully launch nuclear-capable missiles.
