'Ndrangheta mafia boss in "41 bis" regime requests personalized

Antonio Piromalli, known as one of the leaders of the Calabrian mafia 'Ndrangheta', requested an unusual privilege in the Parma prison where he is in the strict 41-bis regime: " To be allowed to eat dinner after 10:00 p.m. His request was simply: Because that's what I'm used to."

But the Court of Cassation rejected the request, stressing that the rules of the 41-bis regime are strict and do not allow for exceptions, not even for preferred food. According to the regulation, cooking equipment in special cells is turned off at 8:00 p.m.

The 53-year-old Piromalli had sought to prepare traditional dishes, relying on the right to “food suitable for personal conditions.” But the Italian judiciary did not allow any exceptions.

The case recalls previous scandals such as that of the Poggioreale prison, where some prisoners had benefited from luxurious treatment. With this decision, the Court gave a clear message that 41-bis is not a hotel, but an iron regime where no privileges are allowed./A2 CNN
