US First Lady Melania Trump has been absent from the public scene in Washington for more than a month, but has suddenly emerged in a role that no one expected: a silent mediator between her husband, President Donald Trump, and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Days before the tense summit in Alaska, where Trump met with Putin to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, Melania sent a personal letter to the Russian president. In it, she appealed to him to “restore the laughter of children ” affected by the war, speaking of “ the same dreams of every child, whether in the city or the village .”
Melania is not often seen. This term she has had only 19 public appearances, half of those in the first four years. But despite the absence, she constantly communicates with her husband through messages and phone calls. Often, according to the president himself, she “brings him down to earth” when he describes conversations with Putin.
A typical example: Trump said he had told his wife about a "great conversation" with Putin, but Melania responded coldly: " Yeah, in the meantime another city got bombed ."
In Ukraine, her letter was received with irony, generating memes with the title "Agent Melania Trumpenko", while President Zelensky, as a diplomatic counterweight, handed Trump a personal letter from his wife to the First Lady of America.
In Moscow, Melania's intervention was met with irritation by state media, which criticized it as an emotional, not political, intervention.
Unlike her predecessors, Jill Biden, Michelle Obama or Laura Bush, Melania has chosen a limited and selective role. She has only 5 employees on staff, compared to over 20 that Jill Biden had. There are no independent visits, no trips abroad, no new political campaign.
He spends most of his time in New York or Palm Beach, far from Washington protocol, and only appears when it comes to causes related to children, from the war in Ukraine and Gaza to the catastrophic floods in Texas.
Melania Trump, born in the former communist Yugoslavia, is seen by analysts as more credible when speaking about the consequences of Russian aggression, due to her roots in a country that fell under Soviet influence.
“ First ladies have a unique moral authority ,” says Anita McBride, Laura Bush’s former chief of staff. “ At critical moments, their word resonates .”
Melania has not publicly said a word about Ukraine or Gaza, but the messages she conveys to her husband clearly point to a single axis: children and their future.
