The Russian Orthodox priest who conducted the memorial service for late opposition leader Alexei Navalny in March has been suspended for three years from clerical duties.
The decision was announced by the Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow. In a statement released yesterday, the diocese did not give a reason for the sentence, which bans priest Dmitry Safronov from giving blessings, celebrating Mass and wearing the priest's cross until 2027.
Safronov was also transferred to another church in Moscow to perform cantor duties.
"At the end of the period of repentance, depending on respect and obedience, a decision will be made about the possibility of further priestly service," the diocese's statement says.
On March 26, Safronov held a memorial service for Navalny, attended by thousands of people. Alexei Navalny was Vladimir Putin's fiercest critic inside Russia and died in February aged 47 in an Arctic prison.
