A serious incident has shaken New York City during celebrations for the 250th anniversary of America's independence, where eight people, including four children, were injured after a gunman opened fire on them in the Coney Island neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Authorities said the assailant opened fire in the yard of a house where a barbecue was taking place, before fleeing on foot.

According to New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the incident occurred around 10:35 p.m. Saturday. An unidentified person, dressed entirely in black and wearing a ski mask, approached the fence along Surf Avenue and fired several shots into the yard where the family was gathered.

Police found eight injured people: four boys aged 6, 7, 12 and 14, two women aged 21 and 25, and two men aged 33 and 37.

According to authorities, the 21-year-old woman and 33-year-old man were shot in the chest, while the 6-year-old boy was hit in the stomach. The other three children were shot in the legs or thighs.

The 21-year-old woman is in critical condition, while the seven other injured are in stable condition. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the attack, stressing that such violence has no place in the city.

" There is no place for this kind of violence in our city. We will not tolerate it and will fight it with every means at our disposal. As we mourn alongside those whose loved ones have been hurt, let us commit to building a city where every celebration is safe and joyful ," he declared.

Authorities have not released the identities of the victims and have not yet confirmed a motive for the attack. According to police, there is no evidence that there was any conflict at the party before the shooting.

However, Commissioner Tisch announced that last week, on the same block, a gang-related homicide occurred and investigators are verifying whether there is any connection between the two events.

A TEC-9 firearm with an extended magazine and 10 spent cartridges were seized at the scene. No suspects have been arrested so far.

Meanwhile, just hours later, another shooting incident occurred in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. An NYPD detective was shot around 4 a.m. Sunday morning while police were confronting an 18-year-old armed man who approached their unmarked vehicle.

According to authorities, the bullet struck the back of the detective's bulletproof vest, who was not seriously injured. Another officer was wounded in the face and shoulder. The suspect was subdued with a taser, disarmed and arrested. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
