Keir Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has welcomed the fall of Bashar al-Assad, saying Syrians "have put up with his brutal regime for far, far too long".

The British Prime Minister stated that his government is "talking to regional allies" while urging Syrians to find "a political way forward", adding that "it is very important that civilians and minorities are protected in this process".

"But I'm very, very pleased that Assad has fallen," Starmer said.

But Keir declined to say whether the UK would hold talks with the rebels who have ousted Assad after 24 years in power.

Starmer said it was important to "stabilise, reject terrorism and violence and that everyone works towards a political solution for the future of Syria and the region".

It is known that the prime minister is visiting the Middle East, a trip he had planned before the fall of the Syrian regime, writes Skynews.

While the trip was originally set to discuss the economic partnership between the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), now regional instability is also part of the discussion.

Starmer is looking to deepen defense and security ties with the UAE and KSA.

UK defense exports to KSA are worth £3.8 billion and are the largest such market for the British.

For many years, the KSA opposed the Assad regime in Syria, as well as its supporters in Iran.

The Saudis previously provided military and financial support to various rebel groups in Syria in the run-up to the 2011 civil war.

Meanwhile, last year Assad visited KSA after the readmission of Syria to the Arab League after an 11-year absence.

Syria was excluded from the group after the outbreak of civil war and the regime's treatment of civilians. The United Arab Emirates similarly severed ties with Syria after the outbreak of war, before restoring them in 2018.
