British Prime Minister goes to Kiev, historic agreement with Ukraine signed

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has arrived in Kiev to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Starmer's office said the UK and Ukraine would sign a historic agreement for a 100-year partnership, to deepen security ties and strengthen partnerships for future generations.

The treaty will increase military cooperation in maritime security through a new structure to strengthen the security of the Baltic, Black and Azov Seas and deter continued Russian aggression.

As the statement pointed out, Ukraine has a highly capable military and a thriving technology sector that is rapidly developing and deploying more advanced combat equipment, and therefore, a security partnership with Ukraine will make Britain stronger.

"To mark the signing of the partnership today, the Prime Minister is expected to announce the UK's new support for Ukraine from lethal aid to economic stability," it said, among other things.

Starmer stressed that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's ambition to cut Ukraine off from its closest partners had suffered a major strategic defeat.

Starmer's trip comes days after the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump in the White House, who has often reiterated his desire to quickly end the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Meanwhile, Kiev has stated that at the center of the talks between Starmer and Zelensky will be the possibility of stationing Western troops in Ukraine to monitor a possible ceasefire agreement, a proposal initially put forward by French President Emmanuel Macron.
