Prigozhin has undermined Putin's justification for the war in Ukraine.

This morning Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said he had taken control of the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don. Putin said Russian authorities will do everything they can to stop it.

The BBC writes that it is a very difficult situation for Moscow. The fact that the head of the Wagner Group, with his fighters, has said that his troops have taken control of the large Russian city of Rostov, is a huge embarrassment for President Putin.

Steve Rosenberg, BBC Russia editor in Moscow writes that Prigozhin has undermined Putin's justification for the war in Ukraine

Wagner's boss Yevgeny Prigozhin has repeatedly publicly criticized the Russian military leadership for months, in particular Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

It came to a head yesterday morning when he accused Shoigu of being responsible for starting the war in Ukraine.

This completely contradicts the arguments of President Putin. Putin claimed that he launched a so-called "special military operation" to "de-Nazify" and demilitarize Ukraine. He claims this is to protect Russia's security.

Prigozhin has said very publicly that this is not true, that this war started because the Minister of Defense wanted to be promoted from general to marshal.

Wagner's leader has now completely undermined the Kremlin's argument. This is dangerous for the Kremlin, especially since Russia's war in Ukraine has not gone quite according to plan.

After 16 months, there is no sign of victory for Putin.
