"In recent days, federal officials have been knocking on the doors of my family, friends, and former employees, not because they have uncovered a crime, but simply because they are trying to find one," Gavin Newsom wrote on the X platform.
The Democratic governor of California did not elaborate on the charges. A request for comment to the Justice Department initially went unanswered. According to Newsom, investigators are arbitrarily reviewing vast amounts of documents.
For the California governor, it is clear that US President Donald Trump has ordered the investigation because he opposes him politically and is considering the possibility of entering the race for the next presidential election.
Newsom accused Trump of using the Justice Department against political opponents and said he and his wife have already been targeted. He said Trump could harass him, investigate him and put him on his political enemies list.
"But keep my wife and my family out of your personal vendetta campaign," the Democrat reacted angrily regarding the investigations.
The two politicians have been considered rivals for years and often clash publicly with harsh statements. Trump has repeatedly called the Democratic governor incompetent.
In June of last year, Trump sparked a backlash with his comments about a possible arrest of the California governor. When asked whether his border security envoy, Tom Homan, should arrest Newsom, Trump replied: “If I were Tom, I would. I think it’s a great idea.”
When asked later what crime Newsom had committed, Trump said his “main crime” was running for governor. According to Trump, Newsom had done “such a bad job” running the state.
The US administration has also taken action against other politicians and officials who have lost Trump's support. Among them are former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Democratic Senator Adam Schiff.
In all cases, Trump had previously publicly called for action against them or made harsh accusations. All of the individuals named have denied any wrongdoing or illegal actions.
