Brazil's Supreme Court has today accepted former President Jair Bolsonaro's request to be released from prison tomorrow, Wednesday (December 24), in order to be hospitalized and undergo surgery on Christmas Day.
The green light was given by Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who presided over Bolsonaro's trial for the attempted coup last September.
The former president was sentenced to 27 years in prison. The request was approved after federal police investigated the case and deemed the surgical intervention "justified."
Bolsonaro, 70, has been serving his sentence at the federal police unit in Brasilia since late November.
Bolsonaro has been battling health problems since he was stabbed in the middle of his 2018 election campaign. It is not clear how long he will be hospitalized.
Judge Moraes requested that the police transport him “discreetly,” noting that he would have to enter the clinic “through the garage.” In April, Bolsonaro underwent another major surgery at the DF Star clinic, and dozens of his supporters gathered outside the hospital.
The judge also allowed his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, to accompany him throughout his hospitalization. The former president was scheduled to give an interview to the website Metropoles today, his first since his imprisonment, but canceled it at the last minute “for health reasons.”
Last Friday, Judge Moraes rejected a new appeal by Bolsonaro's lawyers to allow him to serve his sentence under house arrest. Instead, he approved a similar request from General Augusto Elena Ribeiro, who was convicted in the same case. The general was released on Monday evening and will remain under house arrest, wearing an electronic bracelet.
