George Beebe, former head of the US Central Intelligence Agency's Russia analysis division and former adviser to US Vice President Dick Cheney on Russian affairs, said the impeachment that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently delivered to the head of to the Ukrainian army Valery Zaluzhny "is full of danger", writes 'Newsweek'.

The relationship between Zelensky and Zaluzhny became strained a few months ago.

This Ukrainian general angered the Ukrainian president when he said in November 2023 that the war in Ukraine had reached a "stalemate" due to a failed Ukrainian counteroffensive. After much speculation, Zelensky replaced Zaluzhny on Thursday with Oleksandr Sirsky, commander of Ukraine's ground forces.

Beebe told Newsweek that Zelensky's decision could cause a "broader political crisis" in Ukraine because Zaluzhny is very popular among Ukrainians. A poll conducted in December 2023 by the International Institute of Sociology in Kyiv showed that 62 percent of Ukrainians trust Zelensky and 88 percent trust Zaluzhny.

"When military leaders are dismissed in the middle of a war, it is a sign that something is wrong. Countries do that when they lose, not when they win.” said George Beebe, who now serves as director of strategy at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Government.

"Zelensky's move is fraught with danger. No action can change the fact that Ukraine does not have enough men, weapons and money for a long-term war against Russia. America must continue to help Ukraine in order to prevent its collapse and give Kiev the best possible starting position for negotiations," Beebe added.

Independent thinker Konstantin Skorkin said on Saturday that Zaluzhny's dismissal is a big risk.

"(Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky) has never gone against public opinion so clearly to survive politically," added Skorkin, an expert on Donbass.

However, retired US Vice Admiral Robert Murrett, now a professor at Syracuse University's Maxwell College in the US, said the change at the top of the Ukrainian military represents a logical transition after two years of war.

"Perhaps now is the time for new approaches. Perhaps now is the time to take a long-term stance with which Kiev will put additional pressure on Russia. Perhaps it is time to show international actors and the Ukrainian people determination and resilience,” Murrett said.

Konstantin Skorkin has claimed that Zelensky has long wanted to transfer responsibility for recruitment to the military, and that it is Sirsky who is most likely to do the unpopular job.
