Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, said that Moscow, Washington and Kiev are close to reaching a diplomatic solution to end the war in Ukraine.
On the other hand, he accused Great Britain and other European countries of putting pressure on Kiev to block peace talks.
Dmitriev also stressed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's recent acknowledgement of battlefield realities marked "a major step" toward negotiations.
"I think Russia, the United States and Ukraine are actually quite close to a diplomatic solution. His previous position was that Russia should completely leave, so I actually think we are quite close to a diplomatic solution that can be achieved," Dmitriev said.
Dmitriev also said he believes a Trump-Putin meeting will happen, but "probably at a later date."
Trump spoke with Putin last week and said he planned to meet him in Budapest within the next few weeks, but Trump later canceled the meeting but said it could take place another time.
"The Russia-US dialogue will continue, but of course it is only possible if Russia's interests are taken into account and treated with respect ," Dmitriev said.
Asked about Trump's frustrations that, while his phone calls with Putin are productive, Russia nevertheless continues to strike civilian targets, Dmitriev said the Russian military's position is that it only strikes military targets.
