The dispute within the Republican People's Party (CHP) has become a test of political legitimacy for Turkey's largest opposition party. The clash between the camps of Ozgur Ozel and Kemal Kilicdaroglu is no longer just about control of the party's leadership, but also about its strategic direction after a strong performance in the 2024 local elections.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's first public comments on the issue have tended to portray the situation as an internal opposition problem. However, the conflict has now taken on broader political and institutional dimensions. The outcome of the discussions on an extraordinary congress is expected to affect not only the balance of power within the CHP, but also the broader dynamics of political competition in Turkey ahead of the next election cycle.
These developments highlight the deepest internal crisis the CHP has experienced in recent years, at a time when the party is trying to exploit the political momentum gained after its success in the 2024 local elections.
At the heart of the situation is a court ruling that questions the legitimacy of the CHP's 38th Regular Congress. This ruling has reignited the clash between the current party chairman, Ozgur Ozel, and former chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
Ozel's camp argues that the political direction and leadership of the party should be determined solely by the will of the party delegates and bodies, while recent developments have spurred intense activity at all levels of the party organization.
President Erdogan's first public statement since the court ruling has given the debate a new political dimension. The Turkish president declared that tensions within the CHP do not concern the government, stressing that a conflict that has moved from the halls of congress to the courtrooms remains an internal matter for the main opposition.
According to Erdogan, the government neither has had nor currently has any role in the relevant procedures, seeking to distance itself from the developing political and legal conflict.
Meanwhile, the government and the Justice and Development Party (AKP) reject accusations of political interference in the judicial system, arguing that the relevant procedures are being carried out through established legal channels. However, the debate over the boundaries between judicial processes and political developments continues to fuel strong discussions in public opinion.

Nënshkruesit argumentojnë se vetëm një vendim i ri dhe i qartë nga delegatët e partisë mund të rivendosë plotësisht legjitimitetin e udhëheqjes dhe t'i japë fund pasigurisë së zgjatur që ka përfshirë partinë. Mosmarrëveshja u shtri edhe në Asamblenë e Madhe Kombëtare të Turqisë (TBMM), ku lindën kundërshti lidhur me mbajtjen e mbledhjes së grupit parlamentar të CHP-së.
Mospërfshirja fillestare e fjalimit të planifikuar të Ozgur Ozel në axhendën zyrtare të parlamentit nxiti një debat të ri politik mbi atë se kush ushtron realisht përfaqësimin politik dhe parlamentar të partisë.
Pas ndërhyrjes së grupit parlamentar të CHP-së, mbledhja u përfshi përfundimisht në programin zyrtar, ndërsa Ozel këmbënguli se vazhdon të gëzojë legjitimitetin institucional të nevojshëm për të ushtruar detyrat si drejtues i grupit parlamentar.

Në të njëjtën kohë, Ozgur Ozel u përpoq ta paraqiste qëndrimin e partisë edhe para opinionit ndërkombëtar. Në një artikull të botuar në revistën amerikane Newsweek, ai argumentoi se kriza demokratike në Turqi nuk mund të shihet më vetëm si një çështje e politikës së brendshme ose e të drejtave të njeriut, por lidhet drejtpërdrejt me stabilitetin e Evropës, NATO-s, rajonit të Detit të Zi, Mesdheut Lindor dhe Lindjes së Mesme.
Ai argumentoi gjithashtu se presioni ndaj opozitës është shtuar pas zgjedhjeve vendore të vitit 2024 dhe i lidhi zhvillimet gjyqësore me një debat më të gjerë mbi funksionimin e institucioneve demokratike në vend.
Këto zhvillime sugjerojnë se lufta e brendshme në CHP nuk kufizohet më vetëm në një garë për drejtimin e partisë, por lidhet gjithnjë e më shumë me identitetin strategjik të opozitës turke.
Pyetja kryesore është nëse partia do të arrijë të ruajë vrullin politik të fituar pas zgjedhjeve vendore, në një kohë kur kohezioni i saj i brendshëm po vihet në provë nga zhvillime të njëkohshme politike, organizative dhe gjyqësore.
The coming period is expected to be crucial for the CHP, as initiatives to hold an extraordinary congress, changes in internal balances, and the progress of judicial processes are likely to determine not only the party's leadership, but also the future role of the main opposition force in Turkey.
