No damage or injuries reported; Civil Protection activates crisis unit and continues verifications in coastal areas.
Southern Italy was shaken by a powerful earthquake in the early hours of Tuesday, June 2, which is also the Republic Day holiday. The seismic tremor occurred shortly after midnight in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the coast of Calabria.
According to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 and was recorded at 00:12 local time. The epicenter was located at sea, about 20 kilometers off the northwestern coast of Calabria, near the town of Amantea in the province of Cosenza.
The hypocenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of about 250 kilometers below the seabed. According to the INGV, such deep earthquakes are characteristic of the southern part of the Tyrrhenian Sea and are related to the geological process of subduction of the Ionian lithospheric plate under the territory of Calabria.
The tremors were felt across a wide area of southern Italy, including Calabria, Naples, Basilicata, Puglia and Sicily.
Although the magnitude was significant, the combination of the epicenter at sea and the great depth of the earthquake limited the impact on the surface. Italian Civil Protection authorities announced that no damage to people or property was reported.
Following the incident, the National Department of Civil Protection announced that the operational center was in constant contact with local structures to monitor the situation and carry out the necessary verifications. The director of the department, Fabio Ciciliano, convened the crisis unit in Rome at 01:00.
The regional Civil Protection operations room contacted the mayors of the municipalities closest to the epicenter, including Cetraro, Lamezia Terme and Amantea. According to local authorities, no damage has been reported. The mayor of Cosenza, Franz Caruso, also confirmed that the situation remains under control.
The northwestern coast of Calabria is considered one of the most seismically monitored areas in Italy. Checks on infrastructure and buildings along the Tyrrhenian Sea coastline continued on Tuesday morning.
