Pope Leo said on Sunday that the deaths and suffering caused by the war in the Middle East are a "scandal for all humanity," reiterating his call for an immediate ceasefire.
As the US-Israeli war against Iran enters its fourth week, the first American pope has said he continues to follow with "concern" the situation in the Middle East and other regions ravaged by war and violence.
"We cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of so many people, the defenseless victims of these conflicts. What hurts them hurts all of humanity," Leo said in his weekly Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square.
"I strongly reiterate my call for us to persevere in prayer, so that hostilities cease and the way is finally opened for peace," he added.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump threatened on Saturday to "strike and destroy" Iranian power plants if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.
"If Iran does not FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will strike and destroy their POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST!" Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Following these threats, Iran has presented six conditions to end tensions with the United States and Israel.
Trump has laid out a plan for the possibility of negotiations and "ending" the war, while Iran has made it clear that any agreement will depend on meeting their specific conditions.
According to the official, Tehran has set six main demands: guarantees to prevent future conflicts, the closure of US military bases in the region, compensation for damages, an end to wars on multiple fronts, a new legal framework governing the Strait of Hormuz, and legal action against media figures it considers hostile.
Iranian officials say the current phase of the conflict reflects both military force and a broader strategy aimed at reshaping the regional balance, while insisting that any path to de-escalation must meet their stated conditions.
