French President Emmanuel Macron today warned his Iranian counterpart Ibrahim Raisi in a phone call against any escalation or expansion of the conflict between Israel and Hamas "especially in Lebanon", the French Presidency announced.
Emmanuel Macron recalled the need for everyone to unequivocally condemn Hamas' terrorist attacks on Israel, Israel's right to defend itself and to neutralize terrorist groups that attack its population.
France will continue its "efforts to avoid a flare-up" in the Middle East or the strengthening of the war between Israel and the Hamas organization, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said today from Israel. "The situation is difficult, worrying. It is serious", she said, mentioning the responsibility of all leaders.
"Israel experienced the indescribable. Nothing justifies terrorism. In this there can be neither justification nor explanation" and Israel has the right to protect itself from the rigidity of Hamas", she said.
However, the Israeli response to Hamas "must be firm, strong and fair," Katrin Colonna stressed, reiterating that Israel must respect international and humanitarian justice.
"It is important that the United Nations is able to transport food, basic necessities to the southern Gaza Strip," said Colonna.
After Israel, Catherine Colonna visited Egypt and will visit Lebanon on Monday.
