Their move was more to get as many votes as possible in the local elections, but that still proved unsuccessful, as they lost deeply.
Athens and Thessaloniki have given surprises in the local elections in Greece. When more than 95% of the votes for the municipality of Athens were counted, Haris Doukas, supported by PASOK, was declared the winner. He received about 55.9% against the 44.01% of the current mayor, Kostas Bakoyanis of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' "New Democracy".
Shortly before 20:00 on Sunday, Sigular Logic, the company that publishes the data, said that the battle in Athens had already been decided. Greek media write that immediately after the results, Bakojanis accepted his defeat.
He said he congratulated Dukas on the phone and added that he and his team are available to the newly elected mayor. He also stated that, as he promised before the elections, he will continue to oppose the local problems of the municipality. "Thanks to all my team for the wonderful competition that was played. I am solely responsible for the result. I'm leaving with my head held high...", said Bakoyanis.
Even Doukas made his first comments after the victory.
"Today Athena spoke. I want to thank the people of Athens from the bottom of my heart for the honor they have done me. I know the great responsibility I am taking on. I want to thank from the bottom of my heart my friends, partners and all the citizens who achieved the impossible. We can change Athens and make it the way we dream," he said.
In Thessaloniki, the opposition Stelios Angeloudis leads with 67.34% of the votes against the incumbent mayor Konstantinos Zervas (32.96%), while 98% have been counted.
