Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is moving some of its members to the Israeli border, sparking concerns that it could open a new front in the clash between Tel Aviv and its regional foes, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The IRGC has redeployed fighters from the eastern Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor south to an area near Damascus, according to a Syrian government adviser and a Deir ez-Zor activist.
The activist said some of the displaced soldiers are missile specialists.
The Syrian government adviser said Iran's objective remains largely defensive.
"There is a great concern that if there has been a war, there is a great need to protect the regime," he said.
A spokesman for the Iranian delegation to the United Nations did not respond to a request for comment.
