Moldovan President Maia Sandu said she would vote in a referendum on reunification with Romania, a member of the European Union and NATO, in an interview published on Monday.
In an interview with the British podcast "The Rest is Politics," she said it is becoming "more and more difficult for a small country like Moldova to survive as a democracy, as a sovereign nation and, of course, to resist Russia."
Under Maia Sandu's presidency, Moldova submitted its application for EU membership, which she described as a "more realistic" goal in this interview. Accession negotiations began in 2025.
Maia Sandu's party won parliamentary elections in September, maintaining Moldova's pro-European course. She was elected for a second term in 2024.
Moldova was united with Romania between the two world wars, before being annexed by the Soviet Union. It declared independence after the dissolution of the USSR in 1991.
