In his 20-minute address to his people, Zelensky said Ukraine did not want peace "under any conditions," adding that "we want the end of the war, not the end of Ukraine."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his New Year's greetings, addressed his nation and military troops, expressing confidence in victory against Russia.

Zelensky said a peace deal to end the war with Russia is "90% ready," adding that the remaining 10% of the deal to end nearly four years of conflict will "determine the fate of peace, the fate of Ukraine and Europe."

In his 20-minute address to his people, Zelensky said Ukraine did not want peace "under any conditions," adding that "we want the end of the war, not the end of Ukraine."

He said a Ukrainian withdrawal from the eastern Donbas region would mean "everything would be over," a reference to Russia's maximalist demand that Moscow secure full control of the industrial zone in any peace deal.

Moscow currently controls about 75% of the Donetsk region and about 99% of neighboring Luhansk. The two regions are known together as Donbas. Its fate has been a major sticking point throughout the negotiations, with Russia consistently unwilling to compromise on its goal of taking full control of Donbas.

In the speech, Zelensky thanked leaders who have supported Ukraine, but said that "the goals must become security guarantees and, therefore, be ratified."

Putin's speech, on the other hand, was shorter than Zelensky's. Addressing the war in Ukraine, which Moscow describes as a "special military operation," Putin said: "We try to bring joy and warmth through our care to those who need support and, of course, to stand by our heroes, the participants in the special military operation, both in word and deed."

He paid tribute in particular to his forces fighting in Ukraine, calling them heroes.

"Millions of people across Russia, I assure you, are with you on this New Year's Eve. They are thinking of you, empathizing with you, hoping for you. I wish all our soldiers and commanders a Happy New Year ahead! We believe in you and our Victory ," Putin said.
