Historic church in Amsterdam burns down, authorities: It could all collapse

A powerful fire engulfed the monumental Vondelkerk church in central Amsterdam overnight, causing the complete collapse of the bell tower and severe damage to the central part of the building.

According to the Amsterdam-Amstelland Security Region, the church can no longer be saved, as the flames have engulfed almost the entire building.

The fire started after midnight and was declared major at around 01:00, due to the intensity of the flames and the density of the surrounding housing. A “great shower of sparks” spread eastward, increasing the risk to the surrounding area. All homes near the church have been evacuated, while firefighters have been going door to door to get residents out to safety.

Authorities have said that Vondelpark, which is located very close to the church, is not currently in danger. However, the fire is not yet fully under control and there are fears that the entire structure could collapse. Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema described the incident as a very intense and tragic fire in a monumental church, stressing that the priority remains the safety of residents and the protection of surrounding homes.

The Vondelkerk dates back to 1872 and for many decades has served as a Catholic church, also known as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

About a century later, the building was neglected and threatened with demolition, but thanks to a restoration plan and the creation of a foundation in 1980, it was saved and transformed into a space for cultural events and concerts. Today's fire represents a serious loss for the city's historical and cultural heritage.
