Zohran Mamdani sworn in as mayor of New York City

Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as mayor of New York City in a historic ceremony held just after midnight on January 1, 2026, marking a significant moment for American politics.

Mamdani, 34, becomes the first Muslim mayor to lead the most populous city in the United States and is also considered the youngest in generations to hold the post in the city's history.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the derelict Old City Hall subway station in Manhattan, a historic site symbolic of the importance of public transportation in New York life, where Mamdani placed his hand on the Quran to take the official oath.

Mamdani is also the first person of South Asian descent and the first African-born to hold the office, having moved with his family from Kampala to New York as a child. He won the election in November 2025, defeating prominent rivals Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa, in a race that attracted widespread national attention.

His political platform focuses on lowering the cost of living and expanding social services, including plans for free public transportation, free childcare, and city-managed food banks, issues that resonated with many voters, especially young people and working-class communities.

A larger public swearing-in ceremony, expected to be led by Senator Bernie Sanders, will be held later in the day, along with other celebrations in the city to officially launch his era as New York's mayor.
