Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has criticized the way the European Union currently functions, calling it a "bureaucratic giant" that, according to her, has hindered the continent's competitiveness and strategic development.
During a speech at the general assembly of Confindustria, Italy's main business organization, Meloni stated that European institutions have continuously added bureaucratic rules and procedures to every sector.
"Europe has relentlessly multiplied rules in every area of our lives. It has shown a short-sighted approach at times when it should have had a stronger voice in the international arena," she said.
According to the Italian Prime Minister, one of the main problems of the EU is that ideological and technocratic approaches are often placed above the real needs of the economy and development.
Meloni also called for politics to be returned to the center of European decision-making, emphasizing that the role of bureaucracy should be to implement political decisions and not replace them.
"The bureaucracy should implement policy directions and not replace it," she declared at the end of the speech.
Her comments come at a time when debates are intensifying in some EU countries over reforming European institutions, reducing bureaucracy, and increasing economic flexibility for member states.
