Seven people have died in France as a severe heatwave grips much of Western Europe at the start of summer. Record temperatures have been recorded in France and the United Kingdom, with forecasters warning of further increases in temperatures.

French government spokeswoman Maud Bregeon said the deaths were directly or indirectly linked to extreme temperatures, with five of the cases caused by drowning.

According to Meteo France, the highest temperature recorded on Monday was 37.1 degrees Celsius near Hossegor, in the southwest of the country. The meteorological service warned that in some areas of France temperatures could exceed 36 degrees Celsius during the day on Tuesday.

French authorities also reported that Monday was the hottest day ever recorded for the month of May, with the national average temperature reaching 24.4 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record set in 1944.

Record temperatures were also recorded in the United Kingdom. The British Met Office said that in Kew Gardens, southwest of London, the temperature reached 34.8 degrees Celsius, the highest level ever measured for the month of May.

In Spain, meteorological authorities warned that temperatures of 36 to 38 degrees Celsius will continue in some of the country's main valleys, while in some areas the thermometer could reach up to 40 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the Lazio region in Italy, which includes Rome, has imposed restrictions on work on farms, construction sites and the distribution sector during the hottest hours of the day.

The French government is expected to hold a meeting with the ministers responsible to assess measures to cope with the heat wave, after hundreds of meteorological stations in the country recorded record temperatures for the month of May.

Weather forecasters are warning that further record temperatures could be recorded in France, Spain and the UK over the coming days, while Meteo France has described this episode as an unseasonably warm and unusual heatwave.
