This was said by Giorgia Meloni during the ceremony in Montecitorio in memory of Paolo Borsellino, during which the bag that the magistrate had with him on the day of the Via D'Amelio massacre, on July 19, 1992, was presented for the first time.
"Today we are writing a page in the history of Parliament," said the Prime Minister, expressing gratitude to those who allowed one of Paolo Borsellino's most precious objects to find a place at the heart of our democracy and become a visible symbol.
"The sacrifice of Paolo Borsellino, the servants of the State who were at his side, not only motivated me, but is the story of many people who, from those mafia massacres, decided to react."
Because the thing we must remember is that from those massacres began a popular movement that for the first time visibly said 'no', visibly said 'no' to the violence, blackmail, silence and lawlessness to which the mafia wanted to condemn Italy," said Meloni, reiterating that "the Italian people have the right to know the truth about the years of mafia massacres that culminated in the Capaci and via D'Amelio massacres and every effort to know this truth must be supported.
Like what is being carried out by the Anti-Mafia parliamentary commission, which is working courageously and decisively in this direction. We must continue with tireless research to shed light on the still dark pages of those years of our history.
"33 years later, the testimony of Judge Paolo Borsellino is still firmly in the hands of many people who, even in his teaching, continue to fight the mafia every day: that testimony finds form and substance in the commitment that institutions, at every level, continue against organized crime," said Meloni.
