In a strong speech outside the usual diplomatic framework, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sent a clear message to the United States: Germany and Europe are not vassals, but equal partners.
Speaking in the Bundestag on foreign policy, Merz stressed the need for Europe to speak the "language of political power," calling for the European Union to break away from strategic dependence on major allies and become a global power in its own right.
" Europe has been an important political force for decades when it has stood on the rule of law. We want to protect these values and strengthen them further ," said Merz, adding that unity, autonomy and economic development are the three pillars on which the future of the continent must be built.
Merz did not spare criticism of Washington, especially for its disparaging rhetoric towards NATO's efforts in Afghanistan. " We will not allow a mission undertaken in the name of the United States to be humiliated ," the chancellor declared, recalling the 59 German soldiers who died and 100 were wounded in that conflict. Without directly mentioning Donald Trump, Merz reacted to the former US president's recent attacks, which have once again strained transatlantic relations.
He also spoke about the battle with the US over customs tariffs, calling the withdrawal of US threats against European exports after the mission in Greenland "a European success." "Anyone who thinks of using tariffs as a political weapon against Europe should know that we are capable and ready to defend ourselves," Merz said in a firm tone.
