Donald Trump's special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, the US president's son-in-law, visited the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier on Saturday morning, shortly after the conclusion of talks with Iran, a senior US official and two sources confirmed to CNN.
According to the same official, the visit was made at the invitation of the commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), Admiral Brad Cooper, as a sign of appreciation for the American military personnel serving in the region. The USS Abraham Lincoln is part of the Lincoln Carrier Strike Group.
CNN emphasizes that the presence of Kushner and Witkoff on the aircraft carrier is intended to convey the message that, although Washington has resumed diplomatic contacts with Tehran, the Trump administration continues to maintain a strong military presence in the Middle East.
US forces in the region have been reinforced in recent weeks, at a time when President Trump was considering possible scenarios for military action against Iran, without yet making a decision on their implementation.
The visit came a day after Trump said the United States had had “very good talks” with Iran after indirect talks in Oman. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, he said that “ Iran seems very keen to make a deal ,” adding that the content of the deal remains to be seen.
The contacts constitute the first round of talks between Washington and Tehran since the US and Israeli attacks on Iran last summer. According to a regional source, Omani authorities and the Iranian side were informed in advance of the visit to the aircraft carrier.
