Thousands of people have gathered today in Syria to celebrate the fall of the dictator Bashar al-Assad's regime. They gathered after Friday prayers in the center of the capital, Damascus, as well as in Homs, Aleppo and Hama, the first cities to be taken by Syrian rebels.

There were also celebrations in Suwayda in the south of Syria and in Idlib in the north, from where the movement to topple Assad started at the end of November.

"I want to congratulate the great Syrian people for the victory of this blessed revolution. I call on them to go to the squares and express their joy for this achievement, but without firing bullets and without causing fear in people. Next, let's turn our attention to rebuilding this country. As we have said from the beginning: Victorious with the help of God," said the leader of the rebel forces, Mohammad al Jolani, in a video statement.
