Hungary sees former US President Donald Trump's possible return to the White House as an "opportunity for peace" in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said on Wednesday.
In an interview with Reuters, Szijjártó said Hungary's goal, with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's recent trip to Moscow, was to end the war between Russia and Ukraine through peace talks.
"I believe that only a very strong external influence can make them negotiate. Only President Trump can do it, if elected," he commented.
He also argued that Orban's recent meetings with the Russian and Ukrainian presidents showed the wide gap between them, with other Western leaders unwilling or unable to bring them closer together.
Trump has said he would end the war quickly, but has not laid out a detailed plan to do so.
"We see an opportunity for peace if President Trump wins and an opportunity for good Hungarian-American relations if President Trump wins," the Hungarian minister said.
Szijjártó also said that Hungary does not see Russia as a threat to NATO or EU members and that Russian leaders are "reasonable" and will not risk a direct conflict with the West.
He also noted that Hungary will not oppose NATO's plan to send a new military aid package to Ukraine, but will not participate.
