Washington struck Iranian military targets for the eighth consecutive night after two American soldiers were killed in Jordan. Iran responded with drone attacks on US bases in Kuwait, as the escalation between the two countries continues.
The United States launched another wave of air strikes on Iran on Saturday night, hitting air defense targets and coastal surveillance systems, in what the US Central Command (CENTCOM) described as an effort to weaken Tehran's military capabilities and protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to CENTCOM, the attacks also targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) units, which Washington accuses of attacking US forces in Jordan with ballistic missiles and drones on Friday, which killed two American soldiers, while another is still missing.
"Two American soldiers were killed while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Another service member remains missing," said the CENTCOM statement, which announced that the identities of the victims would not be released until their families were notified.
On the other hand, Iranian state media reported that Qeshm Island, in the Strait of Hormuz, was one of the targets of the American bombing.
A few hours after the attacks, the Iranian military announced that it had launched drone strikes on two US military bases in Kuwait. According to the Iranian Tasnim news agency, which is close to the Revolutionary Guard, the targets were the US military depot at Camp Udairi and the Ali Al Salem air base.
CENTCOM announced that the US strikes were the eighth in a row against Iranian targets and aimed to "further impair Iran's ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz" and "swiftly punish Revolutionary Guard forces that attacked US soldiers in Jordan."
The latest escalation comes after a previous ceasefire between Washington and Tehran collapsed. The agreement, reached in June to end the conflict, collapsed just weeks later, after US President Donald Trump declared on July 8 that it was "over."
Meanwhile, the US has reimposed a blockade on Iranian ports, while Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, significantly increasing tensions in the region and concerns about the security of one of the most important corridors of global oil trade.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reacted to the killing of two American soldiers with a message on the X network: "Glory to the heroes. Their sacrifice only strengthens our resolve."
With the deaths of two soldiers in Jordan, the number of American casualties in the conflict has reached 16, after the death of a US Navy pilot who was reported missing earlier this week was confirmed.
