Bad weather has caused the cancellation of more than 1,500 flights and significant delays in another 2,000 to and from the US, according to the tracking site FlightAware.
According to the data, the Kansas City International Airport has been hit the most for outgoing flights, where 86% of them have been canceled, the BBC reports.
As for incoming flights, the most affected is the International Airport of St.
American Airlines has issued travel advisories for 46 airports due to the winter storm expected to sweep through the central US and East Coast.
The alert covers airports in several states, from Kansas and Missouri to Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The airline has published a complete list of conditions for changing tickets.
American says it may be able to compensate customers traveling to and from these airports due to potential flight disruptions.
Delta, Southwest and United airlines have offered similar services to their customers.
Millions of Americans are bracing for a massive winter storm that could bring the heaviest snowfall and coldest temperatures in a decade.
The storm began in the central US and will move east over the next two days, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. In the central US, there will be "significant disruptions to daily life" and "hazardous or impossible driving conditions" through Sunday, according to the NWS.
A state of emergency was declared in Kentucky, Virginia, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri, while parts of the US not used to extreme cold, such as Mississippi and Florida, were warned to expect dangerous conditions.
A total of 30 states have been put on weather alert as the storm is expected to move east of the country. Cities including Washington, DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia are bracing for snowy and icy conditions.
