Bad weather has engulfed Italy causing damage and flooding in some areas. In Piedmont's Val di Susa, two bridges collapsed, stranding a total of about 50 people in two villages after another river overflowed, blocking a provincial road. Landslides and fallen trees were also reported in these areas.
Two other northern regions, Lombardy and Veneto, were hit by the floods, which caused damage and disruption in the city of Milan, where the local Seveso and Lambro rivers overflowed.
The bad weather that hit northern Italy also caused damage in Valle d'Aosta. At the moment, a stone fall has been reported on state road 26 in the municipality of Montjovet. Floods are also located in the area of Cretaz, in the municipality of Cogne.
Forecasts for the evolution of the situation until 19:00 say that there will be rains that are sometimes widespread and sometimes scattered, with thunderstorms and intense local phenomena in plain areas. However, between 19:00 and midnight, the showers will gradually fade and become at least partially thin, with a more likely chance of thunderstorms in the fields at first.
There was also flooding in Milan, where firefighters said they took part in dozens of operations to rescue people stuck in their cars in flooded road underpasses and to clear flooded basements.
Scientists warn that the climate crisis is increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, such as heat waves, droughts, explosions and floods, in Europe and around the globe. Storms are becoming more severe because warmer air can hold more moisture.
