Heat wave hits Albania, Porja: Two days when temperatures reach 40 degrees

Albania is expected to face a severe heat wave during the second half of July. According to meteorologist Lajda Porja, temperatures will start to rise from Tuesday, while the peak of the heat is expected to be recorded on Thursday and Friday, when in some regions the thermometer could reach up to 40 degrees Celsius, while in isolated areas even higher.

In an interview with "Ora News", Porja said that the second half of the month will be significantly hotter than the first days of July.

"We expect the second half of July to be much hotter than the first half. We have seen that at least in the first ten days of July there have been more normal temperatures, we have been at 33-34 degrees, excluding the weekend which brought a trend of increasing temperatures. A maximum of 35 or 36 degrees is predicted today. However, starting tomorrow, that is, from Tuesday onwards, we expect further increases.

"On Tuesday we expect 37 degrees, 38 on Wednesday, it will be Thursday and Friday that will mark 40 degrees in some regions of Albania: in Shkodër, in Berat, in Gjirokastër, Elbasan. We have quite high temperatures in Tirana, in Fier, in Lushnje where the thermometer there fluctuates from 36 to 38 or 39 degrees. We have temperatures up to 36 degrees along the coastline and temperatures of 32 degrees in mountainous areas. However, we expect the whole week to be hot, starting from Tuesday to Sunday," she said.

According to the meteorologist, the highest temperatures will be recorded in the regions of Shkodra, Berat, Gjirokastra, Elbasan, Tirana, Fier and Lushnja. Meanwhile, in areas such as Kopliku, Belshi, Cërriku, Ura Vajgurore and Lazarati, the thermometer could exceed 40 degrees.

Porja also warned that stable weather, lack of rainfall and wind will increase the risk of fires spreading, especially in the northwest and southwest of the country.

"So, a very stable 15 days are expected for all those who have chosen to take their vacation during the second half of July, because there is no precipitation expected, especially on the coastline, and very high temperatures are expected. I would say that the occasional presence of wind, the wind will be moderate during this week, but at some point even strong, will bring problems in terms of fire outbreaks in areas of Albania," Porja said.

The Meteorology Department called on citizens to avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day and to show increased caution against extreme temperatures.

"It must be said, movements from 11:00 to 3:30 or 4:00 in the afternoon should be a little controlled, for all those who do not need to go out, for all those who go out to work, to try to walk in the shade, to be hydrated, to have water with them, to get through this heat as easily as possible. What you said at the beginning is quite right, when we say normal has time, but a temperature of 40 degrees measured in the shade is equal to 46 degrees in the sun ," the meteorologist said.

According to the forecast, a slight cooling is expected around July 20, when temperatures could drop to 34-35 degrees. However, hot weather will return again, causing the end of July to remain under the influence of high temperatures.
