The dramatic balance of the sudden floods in the southeast of Spain has increased, which now counts 105 victims, and according to the authorities, it is likely that it will not end there.
Transport Minister Óscar Puente declared that there were "dead people in cars", referring to the hundreds of small vehicles and trucks stuck in the mud on the roads.
In a garage in Valencia according to local media, emergency teams found 9 dead bodies. It is not yet clear how many are missing, but to help rescue efforts, hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to this area, one of the hardest hit by the natural disaster.
Some areas can only be reached by helicopter due to mud, debris and piled-up cars blocking the roads. King Felipe VI of Spain warned earlier that the level of destruction in infrastructure is great, therefore, some communities have remained isolated and getting there is more difficult. Meanwhile local authorities have issued warnings about false information circulating online, including claims that Valencia's tap water is safe to drink.
Severe storms with heavy rain and hail the size of "golf balls" hit Spain where rivers burst their banks, roads, houses and fields were flooded in many places, cars and trees were toppled by the bodies of water. As a result, the country's highways and roads had to be closed in the south and east of Spain. Air and rail traffic were also affected. Classes were canceled in many schools and universities. The Spanish government in Madrid urgently set up a crisis headquarters to deal with the problems caused by the storm.
Military units specialized in rescue operations were quickly dispatched from the capital to Valencia to support local services.
